Community Educational Forum Wildlife of Coyote Valley: A Forum on Their Future Sunday, May 6 1:00 4:00pm Almaden Library and Community Center Coyote Valley is a 6,800-acre swath of open space and farmland at San Jose’s southern end. Although the valley is slated for development, it is a critical area for wildlife. Tule elk, mountain lions, and American badgers cross the valley to move between the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Mount Hamilton Range, and the area is home to the threatened Bay Checkerspot butterfly, sensitive frogs and salamanders, and many species of birds. Once close to extinction, tule elk and other rare Bay Area wildlife have been sighted in Coyote Valley and nearby hillsides. Join with experts and fellow residents to learn about the valley’s natural treasures and help ensure their survival. The City of San Jose is preparing a draft Environmental Impact Report on the plan to develop the valley. This is an important opportunity to protect Coyote Valley’s wildlife habitat and biological diversity. Speakers include: San Jose City Councilwoman Nancy Pyle; Dr. Grey Hayes, Elkhorn Slough Foundation; Tanya Diamond, San Jose State University; and Stuart Weiss, Conservation Biologist. The forum is sponsored by the Committee for Green Foothills, Greenbelt Alliance, Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter and the Silicon Valley Land Conservancy. Thanks to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company whose charitable contributions helped to make this event possible.
