Despite overwhelming public opposition, developers Steven Weed and John Vidovich have  submitted a formal application to the City of Half Moon Bay for a 212-room luxury hotel/conference center, a 177-space high-end RV park/clubhouse and a 40-bed hostel on a 47-acre area of open space between Highway 1 and Dunes Beach.

What’s Happening

In January, Committee for Green Foothills submitted to the City Council a petition with 4,680 signatures opposing this massive development. Over 1,880 signers were from Half Moon Bay, 1,300+ were from the Midcoast. Residents and visitors alike want to preserve the site’s scenic coastal views, farm fields, and equestrian facilities and strongly oppose any worsening of traffic congestion on Highway One. While Council members could not comment as this item was not on their Agenda, they heard our message loud and clear.

Unfortunately, the developers did not heed our message.  They have instead chosen to forge ahead, despite interest by Coastside Land Trust to acquire the property (at current fair market value). They now face a long, arduous, and expensive process. Demonstrated public opposition is needed to convince them to choose land protection sooner rather than later.  Many other controversial projects, such as Pacific Ridge and Big Wave, have taken decades to be approved; others have been withdrawn, including 2 previous hotel proposals at Dunes Beach, due to stiff opposition.

Why This is Important

Half Moon Bay’s small town character and quality of life are highly prized by residents and visitors alike. Half Moon Bay has more than enough high-end hotels already. By speaking up now for open space at Dunes Beach, you will help ensure that this site will be permanently protected.

What You Can Do:  

Please join us at 7pm at the October 15 City Council meeting.  Wear blue or green to help create a virtual ocean of support for open space at Dunes Beach.  You do not need to speak; your presence alone will let the Council know that there is overwhelming opposition to this proposal.  We will have signs you can hold up to show support.
