Despite a virtual tidal wave of opposition to the proposed massive hotel and RV park complex at Dunes Beach, developers Steven Weed and John Vidovich have not heeded the public’s call to work with the city for protection of this important open space. It’s imperative we continue to remind the Half Moon Bay City Council members of the public’s opposition to the project. Please email the City Council using the form below, or write and ask them to preserve Dunes Beach as open space.   

What’s Happening 

Developers Weed and Vidovich have submitted revisions to their luxury hotel/conference center and RV park along both sides of Young Avenue west of Highway 1. These revisions are under review by city staff; we expect that the project has not changed significantly. Mere tinkering with details will not address unacceptable impacts from the project, which include worsening of the daily traffic jams on Highway 1, loss of scenic coastal views, and paving over precious open space and prime farmland. 

Opposition to the project has been widespread and is growing. An impressive 150 people attended the city council meeting a year ago with signs, posters, and colorful costumes where we presented petitions with 4680 signatures opposing the project. Another 100 people turned out at the October 15, 2019 council meeting to voice their opposition during public comment at the beginning of the meeting. While council members can’t comment directly on a proposed project, they can certainly indicate unwillingness to entertain a proposal that has overwhelming public opposition. 

Why This Is Important

Half Moon Bay’s open space and farmlands are treasured by residents and visitors alike. Once developed, they are lost forever. For more details, see my recent Guest Opinion in the Half Moon Bay Review.

Please email the City Council using the form below, and ask them to preserve Dunes Beach as open space, or write to them at City Hall, 501 Main Street, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019.
