Community Rallies to Save Ulistac

For the past few months Committee for Green Foothills’ Legislative Advocate, Alice Kaufman, has been organizing a coalition of environmental organizations and local residents to advocate for the protection of Santa Clara’s last remaining open space. Ulistac Natural Area, a beautiful 40-acres of irreplaceable native habitat and the result of over 20 years of volunteer work, is currently under threat of having an artificial turf soccer field plopped down in the middle of it. Working together, this coalition has been attending city council meetings, advocating with city councilmembers, and raising public awareness about this important issue.

We are pleased to report that because of these efforts, last Tuesday (5/20/14), at a packed meeting, the City of Santa Clara Parks Commission declined to recommend developing sports fields at Ulistac. While we can celebrate this as a victory for now, Ulistac is still under threat and we need your continued help to keep the pressure on. We will keep everyone posted as this issue moves forward and there are more opportunities to speak up to protect this important habitat.
