Win for Creeks in San Jose!

Win for Creeks in San Jose!

Coe Park II-Mark_GrzanOn Monday, Legislative Advocate Alice Kaufman sent an action alert asking you to urge San Jose city councilmembers to vote to prioritize the riparian corridor ordinance during yesterday’s “Priority Setting Session.” Today we have good news to share. Last night, after many meetings with Alice and other local environmentalists, and after receiving dozens of emails from our supporters, the San Jose City Council ranked the riparian corridor ordinance among the top 7 issues to focus on in the coming year. Thanks to everyone who spoke out, San Jose is finally going to take this important step towards protecting our creeks and riparian habitat. We would especially like to thank Mayor Sam Liccardo and Councilmembers Ash Kalra, Margie Matthews, Rose Herrera, Don Rocha, and Johnny Khamis for voting for the ordinance last night.

There is still much work to be done as this moves forward and staff begins to create the language for this ordinance. We plan to continue to work with staff and other advocates to not only ensure that the ordinance is created, but that it is strong and enforceable. We’ll keep everyone up-to-date as this work moves forward and there are more opportunities to get involved. For now, we can celebrate this small victory for San Jose creeks!
