Cover Story on Sprawl in S. County

news cover storyToday’s (2/12/16) addition of the Silicon Valley Business Journal features two articles on sprawl in southern Santa Clara County, and both quote our Advocate Julie Hutcheson. In one article, the cover story, Sprawling southward: A clash of values in South County: High prices in northern Silicon Valley are driving plans to build on rural farmland in Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Is it responsible planning, or the return of suburban sprawl?, Nathan Donato explains Julie’s concern over, “the ripple effects of opening the annexation door. In Santa Clara County, land outside city limits is much less develop-able, and therefore less valuable. If landowners see subdivisions over the horizon, it raises property prices, further fueling a land rush. It’s a recipe, she says, for sprawl.”

In the second article, A rare sight in Coyote Valley: Construction work, Development resumes, somewhat, in environmental hot spot, Donato covers the recently rejuvenated pressures to develop Coyote Valley. Julie is also featured in this article, commenting on the warehouse/distribution center proposal and stating that, “when you put something down of that nature, there will automatically be a draw for wanting to put other facilities around it. Before you know it, it will look like any place in the Valley.”
