In the News on Gilroy’s Latest Decision

Gilroy map from articleOn Monday, December 7, Gilroy city councilmembers voted to move forward with a proposal to expand the city’s Urban Service Area (USA) and bring 721 acres into the city for development. Committee for Green Foothills’ advocate Julie Hutcheson has been speaking up against this proposal and was quoted in a recent Silicon Valley Business Journal article, Growing Gilroy? Huge annexation proposal moves forward, could add 4,000 homes in South County (12/8/15) by Nathan Donato-Weinstein.

The article explains, “Julie Hutcheson, legislative advocate for the Committee for a Green Foothills, said in a letter to the city that the planning process should have been allowed to proceed without the urban service area vote.

‘Early community input plainly indicated a preference for compact growth, one which precluded a large area of the current (urban service area amendment) request,” she wrote. ‘Yet Council voted to permit this request to proceed regardless of that input and before the General Plan Advisory Committee could make an unfettered recommendation on their preferred land use alternative.'”

Julie will continue to weight in on this issue and keep the community updated as it moves forward.
