Dear Mayor Liccardo and City Councilmembers,

Please vote for the riparian corridor ordinance during the Priority Setting Session on June 23. Staff has already begun work on this ordinance and should not abandon the progress made so far. With a riparian corridor ordinance in place, San Jose’s creeks will have more protection and San Jose’s residents will benefit from reduced flooding risks.

Sincerely,

What’s Happening
For several years, I and other environmental advocates have been urging San Jose City officials to develop a riparian corridor ordinance to protect the city’s creeks. Staff has finally begun working on this issue. But, if councilmembers don’t rank it as a high priority during tomorrow’s “Priority Setting Session,” staff might be forced to drop this work in order to focus on other issues. We’re urging city councilmembers to vote to keep the riparian corridor ordinance as a top priority for the coming year.

Why It Matters
Protection of riparian corridors is vital for the health of creeks and wildlife. An ordinance would create an enforceable requirement for development to be kept back from the edge of creek banks. This would prevent issues such as erosion, bank collapse, and poor water quality, as well as allow riparian trees and vegetation to remain as wildlife habitat and migration corridors. In addition, requiring setbacks for development avoids flooding risks resulting from increased sedimentation of creek channels.

Thank you for joining me and speaking up to protect San Jose creeks.

Sincerely,

Alice Kaufman
Legislative Advocate
