Speak Up for Responsible Growth in Gilroy

Speak Up for Responsible Growth in Gilroy

Looking North1

Dear Friends,

Please join me in urging Gilroy City Councilmembers to deny a proposal that could allow for the development of 721 acres of open space by Monday, December 7.

What You Can Do
Email Gilroy City Councilmembers by Monday, December 7 ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected].ca.us, [email protected], [email protected]) and ask them to deny this request.

What’s Happening
Gilroy is considering an application to expand its Urban Service Area (USA) from its current northern city limits up to its border with San Martin. The purpose of bringing this 721-acre area into the city is to plan for the development of the North Gilroy Neighborhood Districts which could include over 4,000 homes, 338,000 square feet of commercial space, schools, parks, and possibly a police substation and a fire station.

The Gilroy Planning Commission has unanimously recommended the city council deny this massive 721-acre USA request.

Why It Matters
Gilroy has enough residential vacant land within its current USA to accommodate its growth over the next 10 years. It’s more fiscally prudent and inline with residents’ wishes for the city to encourage development within its current boundary. Focusing on infill rather than growth on the periphery of the city avoids potential stress to city services, infrastructure, water supply, and the premature loss of farmland.

Thank you for joining me in asking Gilroy City Councilmembers to support the Planning Commission’s recommendation to deny this urban service area request.

Sincerely,

Julie Hutcheson
Legislative Advocate
