Leadership for Sustainability, Dr. Hull, with Conversation Cafe

We’re happy to cosponsor this event with Leadership Sunnyvale.

Today’s most pressing challenges demand large-scale systems change. But the challenges are so wicked and people so polarized that traditional approaches to leading change fall short. We need new leadership strategies that help coordinate the actions of people who may never meet, don’t have authority over one another, and may not even know they are connected: people located in different organizations, sectors, time zones, countries, and supply chains. We need practices that help people collaborate across widening differences of opinion, identity, expertise, and culture—differences being fueled by filter bubbles, echo chambers, network propaganda, confirmation bias, and motivated reasoning. And, we need tools that help us adapt to confounding uncertainty and accelerating change, avoid analysis-paralysis, fail forward, and learn by doing.  Professionals equipped with these strategies will have more influence and career success.

Join us for discussion of strategies for systems change with R. Bruce Hull, author of Leadership for Sustainability: Strategies for Tackling Wicked Problems. He will introduce a toolbox of leadership strategies for wicked problems, discuss the challenges and opportunities of being a system change agent, and identify resources professionals can use to build their capacities as change agents. The session will include opportunities to talk with others about Dr. Hull’s ideas and how you might apply them to the wicked problems you are tackling.

Dr. Hull works at the Center for Leadership in Global Sustainability. He promotes leadership strategies for tackling today’s most wicked challenges, including climate, economic development, food, justice, and water. He consults with professionals working on systems-change where businesses, government agencies, and civil society organizations intersect with environmental sustainability and economic development.
